Glow in the Dark

As long as you have the light, believe in the light so that you might become people whose lives are determined by the light (John 12:36 CSB)

I thought about and wrote down this title a few weeks ago. I was not sure when I would get the leading to write again. But this morning, I read John 10 through 12 during my devotional time. This verse jumped out to me urgently. I recently read snippets of the news. I also watched a few highlight reels on social media- sighed and thought, “It’s dark out here”. And it is and I know it is not just me thinking this. I know you see it, feel it, and think it too.

I read these verses in John. I thought about the importance of what Jesus’ light had to offer, and continues to offer daily. His light counteracts what darkness tries to consume: our life, our minds, and our spirits. Jesus warned those listening then. His warning still applies to us listening now. He said that the enemy desires to “steal, kill, and destroy” in the front half of John 10:10. In the back half, He counters that by stating that He (Jesus) came so they (sheep-us) could have life. They could live life to the fullest.

The caveat to this life that oozes out light and eternal life can only be given if we believe in Him. We are mirrors of His reflection if we believe in Him and receive salvation. Just as the moon is the reflection of the sun, so are we a reflection of the Son. Once we accept that we are the sheep of His pasture and are led by Him, we harness light. We become a weapon of darkness that frustrates its effects.

It is not without hardship, dying daily, or warfare, but just as gold and precious metals need to be refined by fire (another form of intense light), so do we. God never said that this life would be easy. He did say that He would be with us though. He did say that in this world we would have trouble. He did say that He overcame the world though. He did say that He is the light of life, the Gate, the Shepherd, and the Savior.

Our lives must mirror this message: have the light, believe in the light, and be determined by the light. The next time you walk into darkness, remember these words: “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Be a spark and glow in the dark.
