Increase in Love

May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else. 1 Thessalonians 3:12 (NIV)

I have this mini-calendar that a friend gifted me a couple of years ago with daily Bible verses as a word of encouragement. As I stumbled on today’s verse in my waking slumber, I stared at it intently, thinking to myself, “God that is exactly what we need to hear”. I am sure like me, you have been feeling and seeing the turmoil around you wondering where are we headed as a people? I think about this daily as I witness how insensitive we have become towards each other. It is sickening and disheartening and when re-reading this verse, I began to check my own heart and pray.

In order for our love to increase, we must seek and grow in love with the One who created us. I think back to a time when I turned my back towards God’s love, when I stopped investing in our interactions daily, and when I allowed the world to dictate how I felt and responded towards others. But then, He gently tugged at my heart and pulled me out of the world-influenced quagmire and redirected me to one of the most important attributes that we should display and walk out each day: Love.

I hope that today and each day moving forward, we can demonstrate the love of Christ to others we encounter; and yes I know what you are thinking, “even my enemies?” Yes, even your enemies (Matthew 5:44). Treat others the way you would want to be treated. Overflow in it each day. God, I wish everyone would get to this place. Could you imagine for a minute what this would create and how much hate could be erased?
